What the VW app handles

The VW app is a useful ownership tool. Lock status, last parked location, vehicle health at a glance - all of it makes daily life with the Allspace easier, and it is worth setting up properly.

It is convenience, though, not recovery. The app shows the last reported position; it does not put a trained operator on the phone or a response vehicle on the road when the car is gone. No carmaker runs a stolen-vehicle control room in this market, VW included.

A car taken two different ways needs cover for both

The Allspace sits in the awkward middle. A clean example holds enough resale value to be worth moving on whole; a damaged or harder-to-shift one feeds the parts stream, because family SUVs sell in volume and their panels, lights and electronics are always in demand. Protection has to assume either outcome.

That starts with a monitored subscription from a South African control room - Cartrack, Netstar or Tracker - with a staffed operations centre and response teams coordinating with SAPS. When the Allspace moves without authority, a person reacts in minutes rather than a phone showing you a dot that has already gone cold.

Why a second, independent layer is worth it

Organised crews increasingly carry jammers - devices that flood the GSM and GPS bands so a primary tracker cannot report. For a sought-after family SUV that is a real risk, and the answer is two-fold: monitoring that is jamming-aware and notices when a unit goes silent, and an independent radio-frequency (RF) beacon that works on a different principle entirely.

An RF beacon does not depend on the cellular network, so it keeps giving response and recovery teams a signal to home in on even when the GSM side is being flooded. On a vehicle as desirable and parts-rich as the Allspace, that second layer is the difference between a hopeful search and an actual recovery.

Running costs

Cover for the Allspace generally runs from about R140 to R270 a month depending on the package and whether you add the RF layer. Device and fitting are normally included on a national contract rather than billed separately.

Insurance and finance

Expect your insurer to require an approved monitored device before cover starts, and a financed Allspace will carry the bank's own tracking condition as well. Keep the subscription active and the fitment certificate filed - both your insurer and the bank can ask for proof.
