Answers before you ask
Most of the questions that reach this page already have a full answer somewhere on the site. Here are the six we are asked most, in short.
Is a tracker compulsory in South Africa?
Not by law. There is no general statute that forces a tracking device into an ordinary private vehicle. The requirement, when it exists, comes from a contract instead — usually the comprehensive insurance policy your insurer writes, or the insurance condition inside a finance agreement.
Do you legally need a tracker?Does my bank require a tracker on a financed car?
Almost never as a blanket clause in the finance agreement itself. What every lender does require is comprehensive cover for the full term — and it is the insurer setting that cover who attaches a tracking condition on high-theft or high-value models. The obligation reaches you through the policy schedule, not the bank.
Lender-by-lender tracker requirementsHow long does a tracker installation take?
For most cars, well under two hours. The figure moves with the vehicle, the type of unit and how carefully it is concealed — and faster is not always better, because a unit fitted in fifteen minutes is a unit fitted somewhere obvious.
How long installation takesWill my insurer still pay out if I had no tracker?
It depends on what your policy actually says and whether you met it. If the schedule made cover conditional on an approved, monitored device and there was none, the insurer has grounds to decline. If no such condition was written, the absence of a tracker is not by itself a reason to refuse a claim.
Insurance payouts without a trackerHow do I cancel a tracking contract?
In writing, to the address in the agreement, keeping a copy. The disputes that drag on for months almost always start with a phone call and nothing on paper. Check the notice period and the remaining term before you send anything.
How to cancel a car trackerWhat actually happens when a tracked car is stolen?
You call the control room, they confirm the vehicle is not simply mislaid, and a recovery team works the live position with the police. Speed matters more than anything else in the sequence, which is why the first phone call should be to the control room rather than around the family.
